Variations on Simple Publication Workflow
The Simple Publication Workflow has this definition:
- Simple workflow that is useful for basic web sites.
- Things start out as private, and can either be submitted for review, or published directly.
- The creator of a content item can edit the item even after it is published.
Roles
Contributor - A contributor can create new content and submit it for review. Contributors can edit existing items which have been published (to make minor edits like correct typos) only if they created the item.
Editor - An editor is similar to a contributor, except that an editor can make modifications items created by any contributor.
Reviewer - Reviewers can only view and edit items that have been submitted for review.
Manager - A manager can see all content at all times, regardless of workflow state. The manager has a Review List of pending items and can edit, publish or retract items at any time.
This workflow makes the review process mandatory only for new content. Once content has been marked published it is the responsibility of the content creator and editor to manage it and the review process is geared towards an organization with some amount of trust to the respective content creators and editors.
For larger edits, contributors, editors, and managers can "check out" a working copy of a published item. This allows the entire editorial team to work on a private copy of the item which can then be "checked in" and replace the original item. During the check out period, the original item remains published and visible to site visitors.
---
Editors: Lauren and Ken - An editor can create new content and submit it for review. Editors can edit existing items which have been published (to make minor edits like correct typos). To modify something which is pending review, an editor must retract the submission before making changes. It is not necessary to retract something which is published to the public.
Managers: Jean and Diane - A manager can see all content at all times, regardless of workflow state. The manager has a Review List of pending items and can edit, publish or retract/send back items at any time.
